The 2006 Senior British Open will be played at the Ailsa Course at the Westin Turnberry Resort, it was announced on Monday.

The event is scheduled for July 27-30, 2006.

The Senior British Open, one of five major championships on the Champions Tour, will return to Turnberry for the sixth time. The last time the venue hosted this event was 2003, when it was won by Tom Watson.

Watson will be defending this title as he won a playoff against Ireland's Des Smyth. Watson's win the year before at Turnberry was also in an extra session as he defeated Carl Mason.

Watson also triumphed at Turnberry in one of the most famous British Opens. He outlasted Jack Nicklaus in the "Duel in the Sun" in 1977, which was one of his five British Open titles.

Also expected to be in the field will be Greg Norman, who finished in third place in 2005. Norman won his first of two claret jugs at Turnberry in 1986.

Tiger Woods improved to 8-1 in playoffs following his win at Harding Park. He doesn’t just obliterate fields like he used to, a la 1999-2001. Tiger Woods has learned something much more important – how to win when you don’t play at your maximum. For the sixth time this year, he won on Sunday. And for the fourth time this year, he may not have been the best player on the course.
